SHIBUYA PHONE

2007

Jan Chipchase ran the Future Perfect blog – an inexhaustible travelogue and document of the developing world’s re-appropriation of western technologies to their own ends. Jan was helping Nokia to understand these markets so that they could develop products with an accurate picture of the needs and wants of the. He paid attention to what we were doing as there was anthropological evidence that not all was well in the western markets with regards to technology.

Jan had commissioned a Shibuya nail bar to customise some Nokia handsets as part of a project to investigate the strong customisation trend taking place across Asia. Jan suggested we do the same and the PENELOPE*PHONE Shibuya was born. The result was a grotesque yet beguiling object, maximum in kitsch yet charming and credible in its craft.
