MIDDLESEX UNIVERSITY SHADE COLLABORATION

We briefed the students from Middlesex University to create Plumen specific shades. We talked them through the need to attractively frame the bulb and to channel the light for a visual impact as well as effective light distribution. The materials and techniques needed to present the bulb’s silhouette whilst mellowing the brightness.

The students arrived at a broad range of designs that drew out different stories and qualities from the bulb – some poetic and some more formal and stylised. Watching so many variations evolve reminded us how the elemental qualities of the Plumen designs were always active in the impression created by bulb and shade combinations. With our production products taking years to reach the customer from initial sketches, it was great to witness a much more compressed development process.
