LightWave

2014

The Design Museum invited Plumen to show off the new Plumen 002 design in their glass tank, placed on the banks of the river Thames in London. The installation ran from November 2014 to February 2015, in the dark and gloomy British winter season.

The LightWave brought some warmth and glamour to passers-by and was created to exploit the directional nature of the 002’s form and its two distinct faces. The wave form mirrored movements in the Thames below and the lights twinkled as they reflected in the echo chamber of the glass box itself but also on reflective surfaces placed around the tank.

The tank is a tiny annex of a formal, serious Museum that interrupts the ordinary flows of London life as joggers, passers-by and workers make their way along the river path. It was free to view and most that did see it hadn’t planned to, so watching the responses was amazing. Refreshing instagram to see people snapping and sharing their excitement about the piece created a real buzz over the course of the installation.
